This is Actually Why C.C. Kissed Lelouch in Code Geass

Why did C.C. kiss Lelouch is a question that many Code Geass Fans have been wondering? Just like the fans I want to know exactly what the relationship between C.C. and Lelouch is. Obviously, I am referring to the R1 and R2 because as we know in the alternative film series C.C. and Lelouch become a couple.

This question is actually inaccurate because technically C.C. kisses Lelouch twice in Code Geass and each time for a different reason.

So, to answer the question I am going to discuss both times C.C. kisses Lelouch.

Lelouch and C.C. kiss two times in Code Geass:

1. Episode 25 of R1
2. Episode 1 of R2

Let’s start with the time in R1.

C.C.’s contract is what has bound these two and throughout the season it starts to become more than that.

You see this with all the times that Lelouch and C.C. playful tease each other.

On a more serious level, Lelouch promises to C.C. that he would control his Geass in wake of what Mao did to both of them.

But in episode 25 something happens to cause this relationship to bloom into romance.

Lelouch and C.C. head to Kamine Island to save Nunnally’s life.

After they arrive on the island and prepare to enter the temple where Nunally they trigger a booby trap.

Lelouch experiences C.C.’s memories and we get an interesting conversation.

“Everyone that has shown me any kindness are gone forever they vanished into the current of Time always existing the endless flow of eternity I am utterly alone” C.C.

“you are not alone we’re each other’s accomplice therefore if you’re supposed to be a witch and perhaps I should be a demon At a time like this” Lelouch.

Lelouch affirms C.C. that she is not alone.

C.C. and Lelouch have always expressed on some level that they will be there for each other.

But this to me was the first time that the motivation to stick together was beyond the contract.

These two genuinely care for each other now.

C.C. expresses this when she says:

“I’ll handle this lunatic you go after Nunnally … I’ll be alright well I am nervous you have to prevail over your own past and over the outcome of your own action” C.C.

What follows is the first time CC kisses Lelouch.

After C.C. lands the Gawain and lets Lelouch off they share this conversation.

“C.C. don’t die” Lelouch

“who are you talking to” C.C.

“you have a point” Lelouch

It’s through these simple exchanges that we learn that these two may actually love each other.

I love how it ends with the same playful banter that the two have been doing since they met.

Why did C.C. kiss Lelouch in this scene?

Because this is how C.C. is affirming with Lelouch that she will be with him to the end. That is why she says “you have to prevail”.

Before all she cared about was getting her contract fulfilled but now it’s more than that.

This has turned from two people bound by a contract to bound by love.

Lelouch shows C.C. his devotion to her

When Lelouch and C.C. experience her past. Lelouch makes it very clear that she is not alone.

This is more than just words because he demonstrated this with his actions. For example, Lelouch saved C.C. from Mao after she abandoned him.

C.C. changes from not trusting anyone, to slowly trusting Lelouch and now she loves him.

If you are wondering why they waiting until the last episode well that is anime 101.

Romances in non-romance anime tend to form near the end of the story. It is just one of the many ways stories keep the reader invested.

This is exactly what happens here.

C.C. needed to undo the Geass that Charles put on Lelouch

We learn later on that Charles Lelouch’s father used his Geass to give him false memories.

Lelouch as a result no longer was Zero and went back to his life as Lelouch Lamperouge. For the Black Knights to reform this had to change.

When C.C. kisses Lelouch she is able to enter his mind and undo the Geass’s effect and allowing Lelouch to remember who is he.

How is C.C. able to do this?

There is no official explanation for this but I have some theories.

1. Jeremiah was modified by the Geass order to be similar to C.C. One of his upgrades was a Geass canceller. Maybe C.C. has a similar ability.
2. Charles tried to kiss C.C. in episode 15 to steal her code which might indicate that kissing is a way to transfer both a code and a Geass from one person to another.
3. In another article that I will link to at the end states that C.C. first kissed Lelouch to save his memories. Doing this allowed her to return them to Lelouch when she kissed him again. The 2nd recap movie discusses this idea.

I love how Code Geass makes the “simple” act of kissing not only a rare occurrence but a relevant plot point. It makes the moments more meaningful not just for C.C. and Lelouch but any time characters express their love for each other.
