The term gets thrown a lot but “underrated” is the exact term that I would define Gungrave as.
 
This is one of the best anime I have seen in a long time. All anime fans need to watch this show.
 
I have already made a review for this series which has no spoilers. For fans who have not seen it, that will be available to you.
But this article is my love letter to this series and what better way to show my appreciation for this anime then by discussing my favorite episodes.
 
Episodes that are so amazing and impactful that you definitely need to watch.

The 8 Amazing Gungrave Episodes That You Need To Watch.

Number 8: Episode 15 Harry


My name is Harry McDowell I’m the new boss of Millennion from now on I’ll live for the family and fight for the family and be willing to die for the family just as all of you will live for the family and fight for the family and be willing to die for the family – Harry McDowell

Episode Summary:

  • “Harry” is a great episode where Harry McDowell finally becomes the head of Millennion.
  • Harry starts to become paranoid and watches over his inner circle very carefully.
  • Widge and Gary tell Maria at Brandon’s grave that he betrayed the organization.
  • Maria in disbelief asks Big Daddy about this and he reveals that Harry killed Brandon Heat.
  • Brandon Heat comes back thanks to necrolization and kills the rampant Orgman.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • This is a critical point in series now that Harry has become the leader of Millennion.
  • It has great action with Brandon coming back to take out the Orgman.
  • There are two heart-wrenching moments
    • Big Daddy reveals to Bear that Maria is pregnant and he wishes to live a peaceful life even though that might make him a traitor.
    • Big Daddy gives in to Maria and tells her that Harry McDowell killed Brandon.
  • We get to see how paranoid and unhinged Harry has become.
    • He visits Biscoe’s family when the house was off the record
    • Harry kills some random kid’s boss because he thought that’s what the kid wanted, this leads to a rant about why Brandon had to die.
 

Number 7: Episode 3 Rain


Deed we were robbed of so many things by you. But I won’t take from you. I’ll give you something. I’ll give you DEATH! – Harry McDowell

Ladd "Mad Dogg Ladd" Carabel

Episode Summary:

  • Harry and his gang bit off more than they could chew and deal with Ladd Carabel the brother of Deed Carabel.
  • Ladd forces Dr. Tokioka to go with his associates after killing all of Tokioka’s lab assistants.
  • Jester, Kenny, and Nathan are brutally killed by Ladd in front of both Harry and Brandon.
  • Before Ladd kills Harry and Brandon Bear Walken arrives and takes him out.
  • Harry acts with his emotions and kills Deed even though he had nothing to do with Ladd’s actions.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • This is the episode that sets Harry and Brandon on their journey which will lead them to Millennion.
  • It’s the first time we are introduced to both Bear Walken and Dr. Tokioka which are two major characters in the story.
  • The episode is dark showing brutal unexpected murders of important characters.
  • Harry takes his first life in this series when he kills Deed.
  • We learn the origins of Maria’s past and why she meant a lot to Jester.
 

Number 6: Episode 16 Letter

  • Big Daddy learns that Brandon is alive and visits him in Dr. Tokioka’s truck.
  • Big Daddy intercepts Maria at Millennion’s headquarters and informs her that Brandon is still alive.
  • Harry in his rage kills Big Daddy which officially made him in charge of Millennion.
  • Dr. Tokioka renames Brandon Heat to Beyond the Grave.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • This where Brandon Heat becomes Beyond the Grave.
  • Big Daddy meet his end by the hand of Harry McDowell.
  • The choice that Harry made to join with Glock leads to the creation of Orgman.
  • Big Daddy gets a nice heartfelt goodbye moment with Brandon Heat.
 

Number 5: Episode 5 Millennion


That’s where we’re headed Brandon all the way to the top of the organization we will become part of the family

  • Brandon works his first job doing money laundering.
  • Brandon explains what Millennion is how it works.
  • Harry introduces Brandon to his good friends Balladbird Lee, and Bob Poundmax.
  • Widge takes Gary and Brandon on a secret mission to take out some thugs who stole jewelry from Millennion.
  • The episode ends with Brandon seeing Maria for the first time since he joined Millennion.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • This episode gives a very detailed explanation of how Millennion works.
  • We are first introduced to Bob and Ballabird in this episode who later become part of Harry’s big four.
  • Brandon learns exactly what Millennion is when Wdige kills the jewelry thieves.
  • Maria seeing Brandon after all this time was really nice to see.
 

Number 4: Episode 14 Die



Harry McDowell will not Turn Traitor. Never. But anyone who breaches the Code of Iron of the Organization will not be forgiven. No matter who he is. Just as you have lived that way, I will live that way. And my job is to kill those who betray the Organization.

  • Harry learns that Maria and Big Daddy are now in a relationship with each other.
  • Big Daddy appoints Alzac Tino as the new leader of Millennion.
  • Harry overhears a conversation between Brandon and Big Daddy which bothers him.
  • After Brandon’s suggestion, He and Harry go to visit their friend’s graves.
  • Harry betrays Brandon by killing him in an elevator.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • Harry makes many mistakes that lead to his downfall but in this episode, he made his greatest by killing Brandon Heat.
  • Brandon and Maria have a great heart to heart where she tells him how she loves Big Daddy.
  • The scene where Big Daddy chooses Alzac over Harry has great visual moments, it’s one of the best scenes in the entire series.
  • There are two great moments of flashbacks in this episode.
    • Harry remembers killing Randy and Asking Tokioka to start the necrolization research.
    • Brandon and Harry remember the time when they were children.
 

Number 3: Episode 26 Dusk of the Destroyers



I keep making the same mistake, choosing Harry McDowell over Millennion, But I have no regrets now, I couldn’t kill my best friend.

Episode Summary:

  • Harry and Brandon have an exchange of ideas and philosophies in their old hang out.
  • A shootout breaks out between Harry, Brandon , and the Millennion forces sent to kill both of them.
  • Harry and Brandon have a powerful moment where Brandon reveals that is happy that he could not kill his best friend and Harry apologizes for everything he has done.
  • They both point their guns at each other and the camera turns away never truly revealing what happened.
  • The episode ends with a character parade and a scene of where Harry first met Brandon

Why You Should Watch It:

  • The confrontation between Harry and Brandon is interesting as it is a powerful exchange of ideas and philosophies.
  • As this is the last episode of the anime it does a great job of wrapping things up while also taking the viewer through memory lane.
  • Brandon’s last stand is an awesome moment to watch.
  • I liked how Harry and Brandon exchange heartfelt words before “killing” each other.
  • I loved how they end the episode with a scene where Brandon first meeting Harry.
 

Number  2:  Episode 7 Five Years Later



To Protect means to not think about yourself for the sake of others. To keep protecting means not to betray.

Episode Summary:

  • The episode starts with Brandon taking out a bunch of guys in a hotel and then fast forwards five years later.
  • There is then a cool montage of Brandon training with Bear Walken and Harry running operations for Millennion.
  • Bunji a legendary hitman is hired to kill Brandon and Harry.
  • Harry is able to convince Bunji to instead work for him and more importantly Millennion because the ones that hired him intended to betray him.
  • Brandon and Harry work with Bunji to kill the men that originally hired Bunji.
  • The episode ends with Big Daddy and Brandon fishing together.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • The opening scene and the montage are awesome they show how much the characters have changed since the party in the previous episode.
  • Bunj is easily top five best characters in this series and he makes debut in this episode (he was in the first episode but I am not counted that).
  • I love the shoot out at the end, Brandon and Bunji take these guys out like it was nothing.
  • There are three scenes that stood out to me.
    • Brandon and Maria talk about how their lives are going.
    • Brandon and Harry visit the graves of their friends and reflect on life.
    • Widge and Gary are visited by Brandon after not seeing him in a while which shows that Brandon did not forget those who helped him out when he started.
 

Number  1:  Episode 13 Betrayal

Episode Summary:

  • Harry purchases a new house for the life he wants to share with Sherry.
  • Widge Burns’ mother dies and Brandon and Big Daddy come to the funeral.
  • Harry is able to convince Bear Walken to give him his blessing to marry his daughter.
  • Brandon cuts any romantic ties with Maria and Big Daddy declares his love for her.
  • Harry has Randy killed for looking into where he was spending his money.

Why You Should Watch It:

  • Many significant decisions and actions are taken that affect the rest of the series.
    • Brandon does not pursue a romance with Maria which leads to Big Daddy dating her (this is important because Mika is born as a result).
    • Bear Walken gives Harry his blessing to marry his daughter which also makes him completely loyal to Harry (he later sacrifices himself to try and stop Brandon).
    • Harry kills Randy which is a classic pupil has become the master scenario.
  • The funeral scene again demonstrates how Brandon really cares about everyone in Millennion not just Harry, Big Daddy, Maria, etc.
  • Bunji looked like a badass in the way he takes out Randy’s Limo.
  • Randy’s death is the first of many things that Harry does to climb the ranks of Millennion.
 

Final thoughts

This was hard to list to make because all the episodes of Gungrave are a must-watch.
 
I hope that this anime will one day gain the same following as the more popular anime in this genre.
