Ten of the Worst Code Geass Characters that I Absolutely Loathe

When it comes to the worst Code Geass characters most people think of either Nina or Suzaku and even Rolo. Heck, I even saw Shirley’s name come up.

To be fair I can see the argument for them. But I don’t hate any of them. And I am not going to discuss why in this article. That’s a topic for another time. I only bring this up because this article will go through the Code Geass characters that I cannot stand the most.

And in my opinion, are the worst characters in the series.

Worst means that I could not stand them or what the characters contribute to the plot or lack thereof.

To challenge myself, not only is Nina nor Suzaku number 1 and 2 on this list but they are not even on it. So, expect some surprises in this one.

I am only going to reference the original series and the new recap films plus Lelouch of the Re;surrection.

And as always keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am sure most will not agree.

After reading please give me your list and argue against my picks. I have been wrong before and I will be again.

Also spoiler warning.

With that out of the way let’s go over Ten Worst Characters in Code Geass.

This is one is going to be a matter of preference. Milly represents all of the Pseudo Ecchi high school fanservice that happens in Code Geass.

Plus all the annoying filler stuff that happens at Ashford.

Take her out and most of that is gone from the series. There is still fan service but you don’t get it from the high school parts of the series.

I can’t stand the fan service in Code Geass especially what happens at Ashford.

I am talking about the school festivals, school events, and how she interacts with everyone. She approved and provided funding for the Fantasy Seduction Club.

Why would anyone approve of that club?

Milly must be bi and no that’s not against anyone who is or her for that matter. But it seems like that’s all Milly thinks about when she sees women. She gives this away when she talks to Shirley in Stage 2 and compliment her body. There are other examples of some of them in the picture dramas.

But beyond that as a character, there is not much there either. Sure she struggles with graduation, arranged marriages, and her family’s royal status.

But all these take a back seat to her Milly’s assets. I have heard the argument that you can’t take Kallen seriously because of the fan service. But Milly actually has the stronger case.

Why?

Because at least with Kallen in the serious moments for the character you do not get any fanservice, with Milly it’s the opposite.

For example in Turn 12 Milly is naked in the shower and thinking about graduation. This is a great setup and realistic.

1. Because people do tend to think about stuff while showering
2. And as a character, Milly is thinking about growing up and moving on in life which is scary for teenagers.

But here is the problem they show you a close-up of her breasts as she folds her arms. It takes you out of the moment. All they had to do was just show her face.

Imagine if Kallen was wearing a bikini when she talks to her mother at the end of Stage 9. It would also distract you from the moment. But you do not get that kind of stuff for Kallen’s serious moments.

I wish they did the same for Milly. But it’s not all bad.

The only reason why she’s low on the list is that once she graduates she is no longer ruining the plot with the fan service stuff at Ashford. She goes to a more supportive role and does mature as a character.

Plus she is quite useful as a reporter.

It’s not worth the wait of 37 episodes for this. If you love fanservice then you probably love this character. If you take away her obvious fan service design and the fan service she forces in the plot, then I do not hate her.

She is actually a nice person and helped out Lelouch. But I can’t stand the fan service.

This character had so much potential. Villetta is a competent KMF pilot and very intelligent with her detective skills. She figured out that Zero was a student and narrowed it to Lelouch.

But after that, it goes downhill from there. Shirley shoots her at the pier which causes a somewhat plot contrived memory loss. And during her memory loss, she acts like a housewife to Ohgi.

Villetta gets her memories back around the same time that Suzaku captured Lelouch making her knowledge of Zero pointless.

But it’s really in R2 where I started to no longer respect the character. Lelouch successfully tricks Villetta with blackmail to help him.

Before this Villetta was part of the team watching Lelouch to make sure he does not regain his memories and to find C.C.

How did someone this smart get outsmarted by Lelouch? Or how did she not find a way to betray Lelouch?

Once this happens Villetta is pretty much useless in the story. Her only major plot relevance afterward was explaining to Ohgi about Lelouch’s Geass, marrying him, and having his child.

This romance is actually explored and reference throughout the series. It’s frustrating because Villetta transformed from a woman with goals and ambitions to Ohgi’s girlfriend.

Ohgi did become Prime Minister and one of Villetta’s goals was to go up in rank. So this does follow her character but she wanted to earn the title not marry into it.

But as Cornelia said rank isn’t everything.

She is only nine on this list because at least I did not mind her but the plot for some reason did.

And of course, we have two scenes of her involving fan service. At least one was actually plot-relevant but that’s another topic for another time.

Fun fact we only see two naked busts in Code Geas. Kallen in Stage 19 and Villetta in Stage 15.

I go back and forth on this character usually with the answer being no I can’t stand Mao.

Mao seemingly came out of nowhere and in my mind only served to get Shirley out of the story.

This is just like later on where Lelouch fights Xingke instead of working with him. I think they did this to Kallen out of the story.

Mao is an interesting character and helps the audience learn more about C.C. and how Geass works.

From Mao we learn:

1. Suzaku can dodge bullets and this is used later on when he is Zero to dodge KMF guns.
2. Lelouch can predict people’s reactions and can make a pre-recorded video that looks like he is having a conversation with someone.
3. Lelouch learns that Suzaku killed his father.
4. The dangers of Geass and how it can consume you.
5. What the final stage of Geass looks like.
6. About another contract made by C.C.

But despite this, I can’t stand this character. Whenever I watch Lelouch of the Rebellion R1 there are two things I never looked forward to:

1. The special administrative Zone of Japan
2. and Mao.

I will say that Mao is a good villain and serves as a worthy opponent to Lelouch. But my god this character does annoying things like the clapping, the mind breaking stuff, and being a nuisance to everyone.

He might be a good villain but no one wants to seem on screen. I understand why Mao is in the story but you could have accomplished what we got from Mao in a better way. Mao subtracts from the story more than what he adds.

Not the worse character but he still makes the list.

Rivalz is annoying and serves no purpose in the story. Every time he interacts with Lelouch I want to stop watching Code Geass.

The attempt at humor with this character is awful. He is also a simp for Milly which is really sad. Now he does have moments where he is somewhat tolerable.

But they’re rare.

I just knew from Stage 1 I was going to hate this character. Unless it’s done right I cannot stand the annoying best friend who can’t get a date while friend the main protagonist scores with all the ladies.

Also since Rivalz is not relevant to the plot the writers have to give him things to do. It gets so bad that they just throw him in scenes where he talks to Milly.

I hate the scenes where he tries to act cool. I am glad Lelouch ignored him as the emperor. It was probably for that time where Rivalz broke his bike and Lelouch had to help him out.

He is not a bad person just annoying and irrelevant.

This is one of the only characters on this list that you are supposed to hate. I liked Schneizel a lot as a villain. What was scary is that sometimes he made sense.

He is also one of the only characterizes to outsmart Lelouch on many occasions.

I love how he took advantage of Lelouch not trusting Suzaku to arm the Lancelot with the F.L.E.I.J.A knowing that Lelouch would not believe Suzaku’s threat.

He even took it a step further and told the Black Knights that they “tried to warn” Lelouch about the F.L.E.I.J.A.
Obviously, since Lelouch did not believe Suzaku he never told the Black Knights about it.

It’s brilliant stuff.

Even pulling Nunnally from death’s hands was a nice twist. So with all the compliments why he is on this.

It’s because of how Code Geass ends.

Many people complain that Nina is a war criminal who killed millions with the F.L.E.I.J.A. They should put her on trial for it. There is some validity to this but let me ask you this.

1. Who funded the creation of F.L.E.I.J.A?
2. Who removed the limiter?
3. Who manipulated Nina and Nunnally to use F.L.E.I.J.A?
4. Who destroyed Pendragon and wanted to kill billions more.

Schneizel that’s who!

And yet nothing happens to this guy. No jail time, execution nothing!. I don’t care that Lelouch commanded him to serve Zero. No one else knew about it and it does not clear this man’s name.

It’s even more frustrating that he flirts with Cornelia at Ohgi’s wedding in Lelouch of the Re;surrection and she acts friendly around him.

This is the same guy who tried to kill her and murdered most of the royal family after destroying Pendragon according to the Lelouch of the Rebellion Re; Manga.

I am going to quote Mr. Potato Head here: “did you all take stupid pills this morning?

Maybe it’s not fair to judge Schneizel from what happens at the end. So I will give one more reason why I don’t like him.

He is a womanizer and a dick.

This just a theory, but he might have had a relationship with Cornelia. I based this on the one time he flirts with her in the series. But in general, he always flirts in a weird way around women. If he was not hot or from the royal family no one would find it acceptable.

We learn from the picture drama that Schneizel treated Kannon badly. He literally whipped him, I am not sure why Kannon follows him.

One more thing the massacre at the SAZ bothered Schneizal but killing Billions didn’t, what a hypocrite.

So he makes the middle of the list because for the most part, I liked the character but the ending killed for me. Stop complaining about Nina and start attacking this man.

I understand the purpose behind Tamaki. He represents the average person who liked Zero. This man loves to utter such nonsense from his mouth and changes his opinion on a dime.

But it’s just so cringy to watch this character open his mouth. Every time he says Zero is my best bud I just die a little inside.

It’s incredible how many times Suzaku could have killed him but didn’t. Of all the Black Knights that died how did this guy live.

Tamaki does not develop much in the story. He starts out as a Zero cheerleader and stays that way. I know he likes Zero and worships him but he takes it too far.

In the beginning, I liked him more since he did not fully trust Zero. But once he does it’s over for me.

They couldn’t even make him a competent KMF. Even a rookie pilot takes him down in training in the Manga Lancelot and Gurren.

This character is like Rivalz but for Zero instead of Lelouch and both annoy me.

Kaguya is very annoying in the show. Much like Tamaki her obsession with Zero is very cringy. Lelouch never shows any interest and she still presses on.

Also she fine with a harem…great. Because Milly adding fan service was not enough.

I recognize that she is intelligent for her age and is very important in the story. But she is full of herself and it’s never earned in the story.

She reminds me of the adorable female character who is cute early on but as the plot goes on the cute antics get really old fast.

I have Kaguya high on this list because I can’t tolerate here nonsense. This girl is so into herself that she even mourns Zero’s death as if there was a marriage. And I thought Shirley’s one-way relationship with Lelouch was bad

Probably not going to win over many people with this one but it is my list so…

People complain about Nina’s racism in Code Geass. Hello, have you met this character? She is way more racist than Nina and her reasons are worse. Also what she does, as a result, is way more impactful than Nina.

Nina had issues being around Japanese people and was afraid of them. That’s it, she never does anything to harm Japanese people. Compare this to Alicia who wanted to oppress and keep things the way they were. Their lives did not matter to her they were just Elevens.

She had no problem with killing all the Japanese people dressed as Zeroes in Turn 8. Suzaku had to step in and prevent it.

When the F.L.E.I.J.A was fired she was wondering why they use it here instead of why they used it at all. I think that choice of words was not an accident. She supported the use of F.L.E.I.J.A making her no better than Schneizel.

Alicia also ordered the execution of Kallen which is just another reason why she made it this high on the list.

We also learn in the new recap films that she prevented Nunnally from seeing Lelouch because it might make his condition worse. We of course know that’s garbage.

This woman is a puppet of the empire and lied to Nunnally during her time under her. It’s more accurate to say she ran Area 11, not Nunnally.

I was so happy when she died from the F.LE.I.J.A in Turn 18. With Nina, there are parts of her character that are redeemable but none from this woman.

Where to begin with her.

Nunnally only serves as the driving force that motivates Lelouch to start the rebellion to destroy Britannia. Although after her “death” Lelouch was able to move on from her. This is why I think at the end of Lelouch of the Re;surrection, Lelouch leaves Nunnally.

He no longer needs to protect her and basing his actions on her is no longer required and may not have been necessary, to begin with.

Nunnally is crippled and cannot do much compared to other characters. Most of the time she adds nothing to the story. Her biggest moments are being captured, becoming a Viceroy in name only, and using the F.L.E.I.J.A., most of this coming in R2.

But what pushes her this high on the list was the conversation she shares with Lelouch in the Sky Fortress Damocles.

Nunnally makes it clear that she just wanted to live with Lelouch She never wanted any of this. They also share a similar conversation when Lelouch is in the Emperor’s transport.

The reason why this bugs me is that Lelouch did all this so they could live peacefully together. Early on in Code Geass, they were hiding in Ashford Academy. What was going to happen after Lelouch graduates high school?

Was he going to attend college nearby? Eventually, they would become separated or exposed. Even though Charles and Marianne sent Lelouch and Nunnally to Japan to project, it never felt like that.

Lelouch explains to Suzaku in an audio drama that the guards are only there to watch Lelouch but not to help him. He and Nunnally are just pawns to be used for negotiating. They were even going to marry Nunnally to Genbu Kururugi for political reasons.

They ran away from that life. So maybe they were safer in Japan but their lives were awful. Lelouch explained in C.C. that before she gave him Geass his life was meaningless. Just a lie.

The point here is Lelouch had to this so they would not have to run anymore. And for Nunnally to criticize him for this is garbage. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s also selfish of Nunnally to not even consider how Lelouch was feeling this whole time.

Maybe Lelouch never wanted to keep living like this.

In general, Nunnally was never my favorite character, but the stuff later on just ruined it for me. They could have made this story just about Lelouch getting revenge for his mother’s death without Nunnally being in the story.

This is kind of random but this is my list and I can’t stand Bradley. They tried to do the whole bloodthirsty trope with him. Something similar to Kenpachi minus depth and substance.

And that’s why I hate this character. Bradley just wants to kill people and takes what’s most valuable.

Why does he feel this way? Don’t know. You can make a good psychopath character who might not even have no clear motivations for his actions.

But it falls flat on Bradley. One of the reasons why is that he has no code or inner belief system.

Something like Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men or the Joker from Joker or The Dark Knight.

It’s cool that they based him on Vlad the Impaler.

They tried to create a psychopath character with little effort. They hoped that by making him spout utter nonsense to Kallen it would make him seem deeper.

But it failed.

Now you could argue that Bradley shows resemble a character in Oz of the Reflection. But my analysis comes from the original series and the alternative universe.

Also if the information about the Valkryie squad was that important then they should have had it in the anime.

Did I mention that this guy has some of the worse dialogue in Code Geass.

Again a random choice but falling back on just being a psychopath and much else pissed me off. Exactly why did we get more scenes of this guy over Monica, Dorothea, and Nonette?

And that’s why Bradley is the worst Code Geass character.
