Introduction

Code Geass R2 it’s quite the popular series so naturally, people have opinions about their favorite episodes.

For some reason, this is one series where I love the whole thing so it’s hard for me to really think about episodes that stood out as my favorites.

So, coming with the list would be a little challenging however I decided to make it more interesting. I gathered the top 10 episodes that users voted on both Funimation and IMDB.

In this article, I will first present the episode number in each heading in this order my selection, IMDB’s and Funimation’s.

Then in each entry, I will then give further information about each episode including where my selection ranks in Funimation and IMDB’s user scores, names, etc.

I am doing this so the headings are not too long to read.

So, by reading this article you will learn not only what I think but also how the fans rank the episodes.

Let’s begin with number 10.

#10 Mine: Turn 14, IMDB: Turn 14, Funimation: Turn 10

  • Ranked on IMDB: #10

The reason behind my selection

This will be probably one of the only times were either Funimation or IMDb agrees with a selection of my list. In this case, IMDB agrees with my number ten choice of Geass Hunt.

Geass hunt is an important episode in the series because it resolves several plotlines at once. we start with destroying the Geass order something that Lelouch has wanted to take care of for a while now.

It also involves the defeat of V.V. who has been a huge thorn in the side of Lelouch for a while now. Shirley’s role in the story comes to an end with her tragic death and the consequences of which affect Lelouch s actions.

It is through these actions that the Black Knights start to doubt the morality of Zero. I also like how Cornelia and Lelouch team up to defeat V.V. both wanting revenge for the use of Geass. For Cornelia it’s for her Euphemia and for Lelouch it’s for Shirley.

Also, C.C goes through a lot in this episode as she kills the people that she once led proving her loyalty to Lelouch and their contract.

The massacre of the Geass order is one of the more destructive things that Lelouch does in the entire series.

The ending is also quite significant because it involves Suzaku willing to use refrain an illegal drug to interrogate Kallen and the Lelouch being transported to the Sword of Akasha.

I definitely enjoyed the when Shen Hu Wins glory but I enjoyed that episode a lot more than this one which you’ll see later on in the list.

I’m not sure why fans on Funimation rank it #23. It’s strange to me considering how impactful to the plot this episode was.

Despite this Geass Hunt is one of the more controversial episodes in the series and earns its place as top ten of my list

The reason behind my selection

Now, this is one episode that for some reason is not popular on either IMDB or Funimation. I can understand why considering it seems like a rehash of the first episode in season one.

This is not far from the truth but what I like about this episode is how It builds on what the first episode did.

it creates that scenario you see often in stories where the character is living a life that you know is incorrect and you’re trying to figure out why and what’s going to happen.

I love how C.C. rescues Lelouch with help from the Black Knights and how it leads to Lelouch gaining back his memories.

Learn here how C.C. kiss was important in this episode

I understand there are those who did not like the episode but you can’t deny that one part where the Guren MK-2 and the Gekka are bowing to Lelouch after he reclaims his powers is so awesome.

Now fans on Funimation list episode 5 Knights of the round as #9 on their list. This is confusing to me because this episode was pretty mediocre and mostly filler I guess if you wanted more fanservice this was the episode.

But I preferred a more substantive episode and I just enjoyed what this one brought to the table. I agree that Schneizel’s Guise is a great episode in fact every episode from 20 – 25 is excellent. This is what makes picking one over another difficult.

So, I had to make a choice and Schneizel’s Guise was not one of them.

The reason behind my selection

This is an excellent episode you learn so much about C.C. and the Sword of Akasha the thought elevator. you got a nice moment with Ohgi and Villetta. Suzaku decides not to be Lelouch and uses refrain on Kallen and he discovers that Lelouch has compromised the team watching him.

Now when I say we learn about C.C. what I mean is we learn about the contract that you formed with Lelouch here. we learn about her past and that she was a Geass user much like Lelouch is now.

Here is a full breakdown of what was C.C’s wish that she hoped to gain through her contract with Lelouch.

There’s a nice reunion between C. C. and V.V. Nina finishes the F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead which is a significant part of the story that will affect things later on.

Lelouch has his first confrontations with Charles in which he learns that he has a code because his Geass failed to kill him.

There’s just so much going on with this one you learn so much about the characters and there are important developments in the plot.

The taste of humiliation which ranks 8 on Funimation to me was never an episode that stood out. The only thing that I enjoyed about it was the fact that it starts the battle of the Tokyo settlement but really that only gets going until episode 18. My choice episode 15 ranks #13 on Funimation for Code Geass R2.

Now IMDb lists episode 15 as #7 as we’ll see later on which makes sense, I don’t personally find it to be that good. Having Emperor Lelouch rank here instead honestly would work for me too. Much like what I said about Schneizel’s Guise any of those episodes within that. Are all excellent I just can’t choose them all obviously.

The reason behind my selection

This is a crazy episode that involves the battle of the Tokyo Settlements. I love how there are two battles being fought here.

You have the rescue team led by Rolo to save Nunnally and Kallen. The other battle is taking place is between the Black Knights and Schneizel ‘s forces.

I never get tired of seeing the Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. Eight Elements make its debut in the series.

Here is a list of my favorite Knightmare Frames in Code Geass

This also has maybe the biggest moment in the series where Suzaku fires off the F.L.E.I.J.A. due to the effect of Lelouch’s Geass.

It’s a serious moment in the anime because Lelouch believes that Nunnally to be dead which was his only reason to live. You have the shock of the mass destruction caused by everyone on the battlefield.

Episode 24 is ranked 7th on Funimation which the Grip of Damocles. An excellent episode for sure but I believe to be much better than that.

  • Episode # in the series 45

The reason behind my selection

Several important key things happened in this episode. You have Suzaku turning on the Knights of the round and trying to take on Charles the Britannia. Lelouch makes his return an epic way by commanding a fleet of Sutherland Knightmare frames to lead him to the Sword of Akasha.

Marion is revealed to have been in the mind of Anya this whole time.
She was also the person that C.C. kept talking to in many episodes when it appeared like she was talking to herself.

There are also good conversations between the letter in Cornelia and Villetta. I like how Schenizel discusses how his father’s apathy angers him and this why he wants to rule Britannia.

This is a very important episode because it sets up a lot of key things that will happen later on in the series.

One of those is the Lelouch defeating his father and becoming emperor of Britannia.

On IMDB and Funimation their ranking for the number six is not too far from each other. Funimation has turn 23 and IMDB turn 24.

I’ve already discussed my thoughts on turn 23. 24 is an excellent episode and in fact, I think it’s even better than number 6.

#5 on My Top List

  • Turn 24
  • Episode # in the series 49
  • Episode Name: The Grip of Damocles
  • Ranked on Funimation: #7
  • Ranked on IMDB: #6

The reason behind my selection

As I said this episode to be a little better than #6 which is why I have it ranked as #5.

I love how the loose defeats Schneizel with the help of Nina’s countermeasure for the F.L.E.I.J.A. and predicting his movements with a pre-recorded video.

My main reason why I love this episode it’s that we learn that Lelouch loves C.C.

Here is a detailed article discussing who Lelouch actually loved in Code Geass.

C.C. even starts to want to actually live life and not just accumulate experiences.

It also sets up the final confrontation between Kallen and Suzaku in the series.

I always get goosebumps when Nunnally opens her eyes for the first time since Marion was “killed”

IMDB has The Ragnarök Connection here and Funimation has Assassin from the Past.

Assassination from the Past has come up in many top lists despite this I consider it one of the worst episodes in the series.

It’s not poorly directed nor is the plot is bad. I just don’t like the fact that they found a horrible way to kill off Shirley when she was so close to being a relevant character again.

With the Ragnarök Connection much like other episodes of my list, it’s such a good one that it needs to be higher. You could rank any episodes between 20 and 25 at a top ten list because they’re all excellent.

  • Episode Name: When Shen Hu Wins Glory
  • Ranked on Funimation: #10
  • Ranked on IMDB: #19

The reason behind my selection

The episode is very interesting because Lelouch takes advantage of the rebellion led by Li Xingke to capture the empress.

Kallen charges off to fight Li Xingke in his Knightmare Frame the Shen Hu only to lose and get captured by the enemy.

By the way, Kallen will be a prisoner for the next eight episodes.

I love how Lelouch was defeated by Li Xingke here. For some reason, I enjoy the episodes where Lelouch faces someone of equal strength.

These moments are some of the best in the series.

Lelouch would later use the same tactic executed by Li Xingke in turn 23 to cripple Schneizel and the Black Knight forces

I know it’s not the flashiest episodes but I enjoyed watching it and come back to it every now and then.

Even before re-watching Code Geass for the first time in 9 years, this episode always stood out to me.

That might have been because seeing Kallen captured really upset at the time.

Both IMDB and Funimation have Final Battle Tokyo II which is my number seven choice. I liked that episode but enough to rank this high.

The reason behind my selection

This is might be a surprise for some. I mean this my number three favorite episode in all Code Geass R2.

But let me explain.

It has my favorite Kallen moment where she is falling and facing certain death only to receive a floating attachment to her Knightmare Frame.

I love how afterward she is able to fight on equal footing with the Knights of the round.

What the Guren can do after this upgrade is insane it seemed like a much bigger jump from her next upgrade in episode 18.

I also love the idea that Black Knights launched a ground invasion from the sky. You got to hand it to them few would have thought of that.

There is also a short-lived reunion with Lelouch and Nunnally since she became the Viceroy of Area 11.

I agree with the users on Funimation that turn 20 is a top ten episode only I have it ranked lower. IMDB unfortunately has turn 13 Assassin from the Past and you know how I feel about that one.

The reason behind my selection

Besides episode 6 there are only two other episodes in all of Code Geass R2 that stand out to me.

Episode 8 is one of them. Afterall how many episodes can you think of that absurd as this one?

They literally get a million Zero outfits to a million people and then transfer them on a ship.

What vehicle can carry a million people?

Despite this, I loved the plan that Lelouch came up with to protect the Black Knights and leave Nunnally alone.

The rest of the episode is okay, I like the nice moment shared between Suzkau and Nuannly concerning Euphemia.

Also, I like how Suzaku refused to kill any of the Zeros because of what happened with Euphemia.

IMDB uses have ranked the number two episode to be 19 Betrayal. Without going into too much detail this is episode is the absolute worse in R2.

It’s one of the many reasons why I have avoided rewatching the series.

At least with Funimation you have the Ragnarök Connection as the second most popular episode. That was definitely one episode that I wanted to find a spot for but simply couldn’t

The reason behind my selection

This episode needs no introduction. There is a reason why I am in agreement with both IMDB and Funimation users.

Turn 25 is the best episode in the R2 and possibly the entire series.

Lelouch’s plan to become the enemy of the world just to become a sacrifice to end the conflict was brilliant.

I love it when Lelouch commands the whole world to obey him. It’s one of the most iconic moments in all of anime.

I love how Kallen and Suzaku have one final fight which results in Kallen “winning.”

This is one of the few endings in anime history that really impacted me. Even years later I would ponder what happened and think about how it could have gone down differently.

I even wrote an analysis paper for my English 102 class about the Zero Requiem (although due to how poorly written it was I am not sure if sharing it is wise.)

Many fans even speculated if Lelouch was even dead and that C.C. was talking to him at the end.

But the creator never gave in and said it was up to the fans to decide. Since the new film is a part of the alternative universe we still do not know if Lelouch died or not at the end.

It’s hard to put this all into words so I will link a great AMV that goes over the entire Zero Requiem.

Definitely watch if you owe it as a Code Geass fan to watch it.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned in the beginning Code Geass is one of those series where it’s hard for me to pinpoint exactly which episodes are my favorite compared to other series.

This is why the list might surprise people’s decisions might surprise some.

well, I think it’s interesting that the majority of my choices are not too far from what other people believe while others are completely out there.

Still, it’s just my opinion and I would love to hear yours.
