The Goriest Anime ever Goes To

Like many of you, I saw this YouTube video on anime specifically a list of gory shows.

Top 10 Goriest Anime from before the Year 2000

You might remember that in that video that the number one choice was Violence Jack Evil Town.

In the video, the narrator said you should only watch this anime if you have the stomach for it.

Recently Retrocrush added this anime to their library so I finally got to watch it.

So you are probably wondering is it as bad as everyone says?

Well you are in luck because today I am taking a look at this classic body horror gorefest to determine how Depraved is Violence Jack.

For this discussion, I will be going over all three episodes of Violence Jack. Also even though the story is an afterthought in this anime I am still going to warn you of Spoilers.

Even though I censored the images it’s worth warning you that this article will contain pornographic and violent images from this series.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you

What is Violence Jack?

Who Created it and When?

Go Nagi created the manga in 1973.

The story is about a 2-meter tall giant named Jack who fights foes in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Jack gets his name because he carries a giant jackknife

In the anime, there are three stories that are all independent from one another. They do share the same event in which an earthquake occurs in Kanto and tears apart Tokyo. Without law and order, the criminals run the show and enslave and kill those that oppose them.

In each scenario, Jack appears as the one who does defend these people from the insane lunatics.

Violence Jack healing himself with magic
Violence Jack healing himself with magic this might be one his connections to Devilman. Violence Jack Harem Bomber at 33 minutes 21 Seconds.

Is it related to Devilman?

The immediate answer is no as Go Nagi has stated that the two stories are not related and Jack is his own character.

But there are some theories that Jack is one of the parts of Devilman called Akira Fudo. These come from the following clues.

  • Jack recognized Miki in the manga who was close with Devilman
  • Jack has three forms a man, woman, and a child and uses magical powers
  • In Devilman three parts become one to fight satan and it is believed that these parts are the three Jacks.

What are Some of the “Issues” with Violence Jack?

The Intense Violence

As mentioned before this anime is known for the over the top body horror and intense violence.

Now violence in anime, as well as other forms of media, is common so what’s the problem?

Well, you could argue Violence Jacks goes a bit overboard.
Here are some examples to bring the point home.

  • A man gets his body cut up by Hell’s Wind (a motorcycle gang) using a chainsaw. The cutting is slow and you feel every moment of it and it becomes hard to watch. This is a stark contrast to more traditional anime where the slicing of another character is done in one swing.
  • This same gang takes a citizen of a peaceful town ties a rope on each of his legs and the other ends on motorcycles. The gang members ride in two separate directions resulting in the man being torn in half (you see the person’s organs).
  • Hell’s Wind attacks other members of this town and commits awful atrocities including public hangings.
  • Jack beheads, disembowels, and rips his enemies apart with all the gore behind it intact.
  • Jun is captured by Joker a Hell’s Wind member. He starts cutting her with his knife progressively going deeper with each slice. If Jack had not arrived Jun would have her organs removed.

In general, their scenes of characters of all ages (including children) killed in the most awful ways.

There comes a point when is this too much and this anime crossed the line.

Rape and Sex Slaves

If the violence in this story is bad then you get bet that the sexually perverse aspects are much worse.

The world in a Violence Jack is ruled by the criminals/ maniacs, who are sexed craved rapists.

Many anime have something like this so what sets Violence Jack apart?

Well, it’s the depiction of these acts and how graphic they are.

Here are some examples of sexual perversion in this anime.

  • Hell’s Wind story begins with Hell’s Wind attacking a couple resulting in cutting the man with a chainsaw and then raping his girlfriend.
  • Harem Bomber is about a post-earthquake Tokyo where the Slum King rules and runs a sex slave operation.
  • You even get a special look at the training. It involves men raping and whipping tied up women.
  • Rose one of these trainers rapes Yumi one of the recaptured females and her men force the other recaptured woman to watch.

I have not even gotten into Evil Town which is the biggest perpetrator of them all.

  • In this episode, supermodels, businessmen, and criminals are trapped underground after an earthquake hits Tokyo.
  • Initially, they all lived peacefully but then the businessmen turned on the models by drugging and ultimately raping them.
  • After this, the models isolate themselves from everyone else for protection.
  • The conclusion of this story has the businessmen and criminals working together to rape the models.
  • Both rape scenes involve gang banging and showing genitals during these sex scenes.
  •  This level of graphic detail separates it from other anime that do show similar levels of depravity.

Luckily they censored this anime and that was the one I watched.

The same group of people raped and killed one of the models with a baseball bat. Thankfully you only see the aftermath but it’s very graphic.

I could go on but I think you get the idea.

You can now understand why this show is controversal.

Are these Issues Really a Problem?

Is Violence Jack a Hentai like Urodojitsu?

For those who do not know Urodojitsu is a famous hentai (anime version of porn) known for its tentacle rape.

But much like Violence Jack it also has a story that some would consider better than your average hentai.

On a side note, I do find it hilarious that MAL labels Violence Jack with a disclaimer that states “mild nudity”.

Is Violence Jack a hentai like Urodojitsu well according to some you could draw that conclusion?

For example in the book 500 Essential Anime Movies by Helen McCarthy, the author discusses Violence Jack Hell’s Wind

“This is probably the most grossly offensive series ever made, far outdoing Urotsukidoji in that regard since most of the violence in it is carried out by humans upon other humans, simply because they can”.(McCarthy 461)

If Urodojitsu is hentai and Violence Jack is worse then what does that make it?

Of course this one person’s opinion on the matter. There is a video from the YouTube channel called Bonsai Pop where they think Urodojitsu should not be judged merely as a hentai.

I don’t consider it one simply because the overarching plot does not revolve around sex rather sex is just added for “flavor”.

  • What I mean is if you removed the sex scenes from Violence Jack you still have a “cohesive story”. While most hentai would not work with the removal of the sex aspects.
  • Also, the main protagonist in the story does not partake in the sex which is something not seen in hentai

But Regardless of how you classify Violence Jack the real question is does it even matter?

On some level, no many anime fans value hentai in the same vein as a regular anime.

My approach is different as I despise hentai and don’t value it like regular anime.

So it’s very important when you classify something as hentai or not.

There is a significant difference between the quality of hentai vs other anime genres.

So, it’s important that we don’t throw the classification of hentai around unless it really is one.

Because hentai is not just anime with nudity and sex. There are plenty of other anime that have those elements that are not considered hentai.

The distinctions go beyond that including the comical portrayal of sex which is usually completely devoid of reality.

Is Violence Jack’s “violence” and “sexual” content a problem?

Yes, but it is not the level of hentai but this is something that I do go back and forth on.

It's scenes like this you blur the lines between what is and is not considered a Hentai. Violence Jack Evil Town at 41 minutes 27 seconds

Do We Gain Anything Positive From Violence Jack

Surprisingly there are some good things that come from this series

For one thing, you learn to be grateful for what you have

  • This is a stretch but remember in this world everyday life is gone.
  • People are living in primitive towns with no protection or the benefits of modern technology.
  • I cannot imagine living my current lifestyle and the next going back to a primitive lifestyle.

Jack serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times there is light, not everybody becomes corrupt and gives in to their animalistic urges.

Lastly and this the biggest stretch especially after everything that I wrote earlier but we do have ass-kicking female in this anime

It’s not much but its pretty good.

Jun taking aim at Hell's Wind
In Hell's Wind we meet this badass woman named Jun. She has been training to kill the members of Hell's Wind. Violence Jack Hells Wind at 24 minutes 4 seconds

Are there any modern anime that compares to Violence Jack

With the violence absolutely there tons including:

  • Hellsing Ultimate,
  • Another,
  • Elfen Lied,
  • When They Cry,
  • Baki,
  • Terraformers,
  • Gantz etc.

But I can’t think of many that have graphic sex as Violence Jack that are not hentai. This again why I go back forth with Violence Jack.

The point here is that obviously most people seem to find the level of violence to be okay if modern anime replicates it.

Although even the insanity of Hellsing never quite gets to the level of Violence Jack.

There is one anime that made recent headlines about its violent sexual content that is worth mentioning.

In Goblin Slayer ep 1 one of the female companions in this group is raped by a Goblin.

We don’t see the actual rape only the before and after parts of it.

I often wonder if this is worse than Violence Jack because sometimes what we don’t see can be more impactful than what we do see.

Regardless that is one of the more mainstream modern animes that shares some of the graphical sex to Violence Jack.

But even then it still never crossed that line.

Is This something you should actually Watch?

So now we actually answer the question should you watch Violence Jack.

After watching an analyzing this series no I don’t think you should.

Here is why:

  • The story is awful and forgettable
  • Both sexual and violent aspects can be found in different animes (hentai for the sexual aspects)
  • It’s messed up and not very enjoyable either.

But I do acknowledge that if you have watched hentai or other body horror anime of the 80s and 90s you might find no faults in the content.

I also know that since I said don’t watch it,  you will anyway because that’s how human nature works.

So instead what I will say if you have an interest you should get out of your system and hopeful you will forget what you saw.

Or you could just skip the sex parts.

Let’s be honest you most likely won’t.
