Introduction
Many fans agreed that Kallen loved Zero, the real question is does Kallen also loves Lelouch.
You have probably have seen this before:
Shirley loved Lelouch Lamperouge, Kallen loved Lelouch as Zero, and C.C. loved Lelouch vi Britannia.
I always accepted that statement to be true.
This is why I did not think much about if Kallen loved Lelouch when I originally wrote my article on facts on Kallen.
However, many people corrected me by stating that Kallen did in fact love Lelouch, not just Zero.
So, I looked into the arguments to come up with a final verdict on this topic.
But the problem is, it’s not that simple and requires a deep dive into both sides of the argument.
The answer changes depending on what part of Code Geass you are talking about.
This is why it’s important to first establish how we know that Kallen loves and cares for Zero.
Then we have to take one extra step and look into her relationship with Lelouch.
I am going to accomplish this by going over Kallen’s relationship with Lelouch/ Zero throughout Code Geass.
By the end, you will not only get the answer to this question but learn new insights on Kallen, Lelouch, and Code Geass as a whole.
As usual, expect heavy spoilers. I can’t wait to hear your feedback on this topic.
I also recently uploaded a video that also goes through this topic you can watch it here.
Their Relationship Before Kallen Learns Zero’s Identity
Her Relationship With Lelouch
Lelouch and Kallen do not get started on the right foot. For one thing, Kallen tries to kill Lelouch in the shower. He humiliates her by pointing out that she is naked and in plain sight.
Later on, in the series, they have conversations after observing an Eleven getting mistreated by Britannians.
Lelouch explains to Kallen that it is better to subservient to Britannia and live a normal life.
Kallen gets angry at this comment and slaps him. She is also angry at him for being smart but not doing much with it.
We don’t have many other interactions between the two. There is a scene with Shirley making sure that Kallen does not love Lelouch.
In that scene, Kallen was probably only embarrassed because discussing those topics bother her.
There are plenty of other examples of this in the series.
We can infer that at this time Kallen is not in love with Lelouch.
Her Relationship With Zero
Now before Kallen learns about Zero’s identity she goes from thankful to being enamored with him.
We see this in the way Kallen responds to being made head of the Zero Squad.
Her tone when she says “Zero” demonstrates how she views Zero.
She also affirms her loyalty to Lelouch after Shirley’s dad’s death after being told she can leave.
Also, it’s important to note that Kallen had an opportunity to learn about Zero’s identity but declines the offer.
I am exactly why she does but it could be because she respects him so much that she does not need to see his face.
Kallen’s devotion goes south after she learns that Lelouch was Zero. She feels betrayed by Lelouch.
It’s important to note that she says Lelouch and not Zero this will be important to remember later on.
So, Kallen at this point is not in love with Zero either rather merely infatuated by him. But I do wonder if the betrayal changed her opinion. We know it probably made her hate Lelouch.

At the start of R2 Kallen works with the remaining Black Knights to rescue Lelouch.
After the rescue and Lelouch regains his memories he proceeds to lead the Black Knights against the new Viceroy of Area 11 Calares.
Kallen goes to the same room as Lelouch instead of the post he assigned her to.
Lelouch is surprised by this and then sees Kallen point a gun at him. She wants to know if her loyalty was real or not, was Geass used?
Lelouch assures her that he did not use his Geass on her (lie) and her mind is her own.
Kallen states that she is loyal to Zero and not Lelouch. Again Lelouch mentions he can see her breasts.
This causes Kallen to calls him a pervert and she emphasizes this about Lelouch, not Zero.
At this point, Kallen looks to be only interested in following Zero and hates Lelouch.
We have another example later on where Kallen stops Lelouch from using Refrain in R2 Turn 7.
Now when Kallen tells him to stop she mentions that he is Zero and has obligations.
Kallen wants Zero so much to give her orders that she begs Lelouch to pretend.
What is important here is that Kallen only mentions Zero, not Nunnally or stopping Britannia.
Now from R1 Stage 25, Kallen is listening to Suzaku and Lelouch talk. Lelouch mentions that Nunnally is in danger and he needs to rescue her.
So, Kallen understands that Lelouch cares about her but yet she does not bring it up in Turn 7,
My conclusion is that she does not care about Lelouch only his role as Zero.
Here are Other Important Moments Between the Two
Between these interactions, we get a playful moment between Kallen and Lelouch where he jokes about their relationship in R2 Turn 5.
Again Kallen does not like these topics and merely dodges by asking if she is still in charge of the Zero squad.
We learn from here that Kallen again only cares about Zero.
The final point I want to make is how Kallen responds to Lelouch when Britannian forces capture her in R2 Turn 10.
She apologizes for her failure and Lelouch assures her that he will save her and it does not matter that she failed.
Kallen says to herself “I am waiting Lelouch”
Notice she says Lelouch and not Zero. I am not sure why if this is significant but it’s the first she says his name like that.

Nunnally the X-Factor to Changing Kallen’s Mind
Kallen’s opinion on Lelouch changes while she is captured and it’s all thanks to Nunnally.
While Kallen was in captivity Nunnally would often talk to her about Lelouch. Kallen from these conversations learns about Lelouch vi Britannia the brother of Nunnally.
This is important because up until now Kallen only knew Lelouch’s other personas Zero and Lelouch Lamperouge.
This helps Kallen to change her tune and even contemplates who is the real Lelouch in R2 Turn 17.
We see a change in R2 Turn 19 where Kallen talks to Zero like he is Lelouch. She speaks on a personal level by trying to confront him with the loss of Nunnally and even brings up her brother. Kallen goes as far as to tell him that Nunnally saved her life.
When the Black Knights were going to kill Lelouch she defended him. Lelouch whispers to Kallen to live which causes confusion in terms of how she feels about him.
Because prior to him saying that she felt used and betrayed again since Lelouch publically called her a pawn.
It’s thanks to Nunnally that Kallen has come to learn about the real Lelouch and is growing to like him now.
She is definitely not in love with Lelouch at this point but let’s keep going.

Kallen’s First Kiss and It’s Significance
After Lelouch becomes 99th Emperor of Britannia he decides to join the United Federation of Nations.
When Lelouch arrives for the voting at Ashford Academy Kallen escorts him to the Gynmanisum.
They go the long route which leads to a private area. It is here that Kallen asks Lelouch why did he mean by you need to live.
Lelouch does not answer and Kallen then kisses him. This is Kallen’s first kiss which is important because she was saving it for someone special. That person was Lelouch.
So, I originally stated that this is where Kallen declares her love for Lelouch as Zero but I might be mistaken.
This kiss might actually be her declaration that she loves Lelouch vi Britannia.
But if there was any doubt we have two more scenes to discuss to wrap this all up.
Kallen Nearly Lelouch Kills While Also Heartbroken.
In R2 Turn 24 Kallen interrupts a private moment between C.C. and Lelouch.
Kallen tells Lelouch that she is going to stop him and she refers to him as Lelouch and not Zero.
This is a stark contrast between earlier in the show and now since she is starting to refer to Lelouch as Lelouch and not Zero.
Kallen also has tears in her eyes as she says goodbye Lelouch. Keep in mind she also said that to him in R2 Turn 22.
At this point, she is heartbroken that Lelouch did not return her feelings.
C.C. stops Kallen from killing Lelouch and ends up fighting her with the Lancelot Frontier.
During the fight, Kallen tells C.C. that she has nothing to fight for and should leave the battlefield.
But C.C says she has a promise to which, Kallen responds “do you love Lelouch”. I never thought about that question before but I wonder if Kallen was asking this out of jealousy.
It actually makes sense if you think about it. Even early on in R1 Turn 11, Kallen was aware that C.C. has a closer relationship with Lelouch.
It’s just a theory.
But here is the part where I screwed up and completely ignored the most obvious thing.
When Suzaku as Zero kills Lelouch you see Kallen reacts with tears.
Even while Suzaku charges at Lelouch, Kallen expresses how she does not want Zero to kill Lelouch.
What’s important here is that Kallen sees Zero and Lelouch together and still cries after Lelouch’s death.
This shows that Kallen decided that Lelouch vi Britannia is the real Lelouch and the one she loves.
Kallen confirms this by saying “it’s Zero it’s him”.
I love this because Kallen acknowledges the Zero was just a symbol, a role that anyone could play.
Lelouch has played this role as has C.C., at one time everybody, and now its Suzaku’s turn.
We get something less subtle where Kallen looks at a photo of Lelouch, and not of Zero with a smile on her face.
So, by the end of the series, Kallen is in love with Lelouch vi Britannia and possibly no longer with Zero.

In conclusion, I want to apologize again for incorrectly stating that Kallen only loved Zero.
After reviewing the evidence this is no longer the case.
I will still keep the last item on my Kallen list as is because their relationship is complicated and changes throughout the series.
But now I ask you what do you think did Kallen love Lelouch?
Is my analysis completely wrong or right?
Let me know in the comments. This article is proof that I care what people think about my articles and that I am willing to make corrections if needed.

Nice analysis. Kallen might be my favourite character from Code Geass, and that’s definitely partly because of her complicated relationship with Lelouch. I love the way that by the second season she’s happy just lounging around with Lelouch and C.C. and quite happy to tell him bluntly her opinion on things.
That kiss in R2 episode 22 was hugely moving. There’s a superb anime music video of White Flag by Dido about Kallen’s feelings for Lelouch which goes through a bunch of the key moments between those two in the series, and is very emotionally satisfying to watch: I recommend it!
I’m currently creating a set of home-made Magic: the Gathering cards all themed around Code Geass. If you know Magic, you can check out the link on magicmultiverse.net :)
Hey, Alex thanks for leaving a comment I appreciate. After reading your comment I immediately found the video and enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation.
I love your point “I love the way that by the second season she’s happy just lounging around with Lelouch and C.C. and quite happy to tell him bluntly her opinion on things.”.
Because now that she knew about Zero’s identity she was able to become closer with him. Kallen was part of the team and played a much larger role in things to come. She definitely had moments where she unapologetically told Lelouch and C.C. how she felt about stuff.
That kiss scene was amazing and I wish Lelouch responded to it instead of ignoring it. But I understand he had to play the role of the evilest person in the world. Too bad we never get an OVA that delves into a what-if scenario with Lelouch admitting his love for Kallen.
Also, I checked the link how do I find the cards that you made?
